Farmer groups call for boycott against Reliance Jio SIM cards

Highlights
  • Farmer groups have called for a boycott of Reliance Jio SIM cards
  • The call for the boycott comes after failed negotiations with the Indian Government.
  • Such a move could hurt Reliance Jio’s future growth prospects as it has been aggressively expanding into rural areas for quite some time now.

After a round of negotiations with the Indian Government, farmer groups have called for a boycott of Reliance Jio SIM cards. The information comes via an independent journalist on Twitter, who has reportedly interacted with the leaders of said groups. This rather peculiar decision comes as a pushback towards corporate entities like Reliance, who will allegedly benefit from the reduced regulations set in place by the aforementioned bills. Just how much this boycott will affect Reliance Jio’s growth prospects in the country remains to be seen. However, it should get some alarm bells ringing, as the telecommunications provider has been banking on rural expansion for quite some time now.

Reliance Jio skyrocketed to the top of the food chain shortly after its inception in September 2016. Its monumental success has come at the cost of competing service providers, who have had to drastically change their strategy, or even merge in the case of Vodafone and Idea. If the proposed Reliance Jio boycott goes through, it should give them a chance to regain some of the lost market share. We can expect the likes of Airtel and Vodafone-Idea to bank on this opportunity in the coming days.

But the real question here is, will users based in rural areas be able to follow through with boycott? Reliance Jio has a labyrinthine network that spans across the nation, even in the far-flung corners of the country. More often than not, Reliance Jio is the only provider that services a specific area. Users based at such locations may have to forfeit network connectivity altogether, which can be a harrowing prospect in this day and age. Furthermore, Reliance Jio plans on rolling out 5G networks in the country by the end of 2021, making the boycott all the more difficult for those who want high-speed connectivity.
