Instagram Lite re-introduced in India, missing features include Reels and IGTV

Highlights
  • The Instagram Lite app has now been introduced again in India.
  • It is only 2MB in size and comes with most Instagram features, except for Reels and IGTV.

Instagram Lite has been launched in India. Given how resource-heavy modern-day social media apps have become, companies have no choice but to release stripped-down versions of these apps for smartphones that do not have great cellular connectivity. Almost every core Google service like Search, Maps, and Chrome has a lightweight alternative. Similarly, Facebook has Facebook Lite, and now Instagram Lite. It appears that Instagram Lite is all set to make a comeback soon, after being introduced for testing in India back in 2018 and discontinued in May this year, as the app is now being tested again in India. Instagram Lite is specifically made for Android and is already available for download on the Google Play Store.

Instagram Lite will come with support for several local languages such as Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu. As it is a barebones version of the ‘real deal’, it lacks a lot of features that define the quintessential Instagram experience. For example, Reels and IGTV will not work on Instagram Lite, but that’s understandable, as the more video-focused aspects of the app tend to be resource hogs. At the very least, the UI is more or less identical to that of the original.

Vishal Shah, VP of Product at Instagram told Techcrunch in a statement “With the test of Instagram Lite, we’re aiming to democratize expression and creativity for a greater number of people in India.” The app should find a lot of takers in India, as it is only 2MB in size and already has quite a far-reaching audience. Back when the app was in commission, it had a whopping 164 million active users in total.
